The University of Oregon Jazz Studies program is still hosting live auditions for students seeking scholarship consideration and/or applying to become Jazz Studies majors starting Fall 2021. Those auditions are being scheduled on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Steve Owen and Paul Krueger to set up a live audition time on February 6th, or to ask any other questions you may have.
For those students performing live auditions, see the audition requirements here.
Online Auditions
Any student is welcome to submit an online audition instead of performing live. Applicants should prepare three or four pieces in varied styles (ballad, swing, straight 8th, etc.). These pieces should be performed by memory, including the melody and two or more improvised choruses. Please record all of these with a backing track (e.g. Jamey Aebersold play-along recordings, Learn Jazz Standards backing tracks, etc). Video submissions are preferred, but we will accept submissions which only contain audio as well.
Jazz saxophonists should also prepare 12 major and 12 harmonic minor scales. These scales should be slurred, using the full range of the saxophone. All scales should be memorized. One-octave scales are not acceptable.
Optional: Composers/Arrangers may also upload one or two samples of your composing/arranging. Please submit both the score/lead sheet and the recording.
To upload your recordings, please see the instructions on our School of Music website.
After you have submitted your application/audition, be on the lookout for an email from the University of Oregon jazz studies faculty. We will be reaching out to set up a zoom meeting to get to know you, tell you about our program, and hopefully answer any questions you may have.
Also, if you haven’t already, please be sure to complete a University of Oregon application. We cannot process your School of Music and Dance application until it is completed.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please send an email to Steve Owen and Paul Krueger and ask away!
