Community Programs

The Jazz Studies program at the University of Oregon hosts a number of educational workshops/opportunities open to the broader community.

The Day of Improvisation is a FREE one-day workshop where high school students from around the state work with UO Jazz Studies Faculty on the art of improvisation. Students study how to apply various practice methods to selected repertoire in masterclasses throughout the day, and rehearse in small jazz groups before performing at the end of the day. Students must be nominated by their band director to participate.

The Oregon Jazz Festival is an annual event co-hosted by the University of Oregon Jazz Studies program and the Lane Community College music program. The festival brings middle school, high school, and college groups from around the state to Eugene for a weekend of performances and workshops from internationally renown guest artists and educators.

The Summer Jazz Improvisation Camp is for junior-high through high-school aged instrumentalists wanting to develop skills in the art of improvisation. The camp is designed for musicians with advanced improvisation experience as well as for performers wanting to learn how to improvise for the first time. The University of Oregon Jazz Studies faculty and a team of the region’s finest jazz artists/educators work with students at this week-long, work-intensive camp.
